The majority of new businesses, and even older ones, don't
realize there are ways to freely publicize their products
or services. It is possible to get free advertising. And
there are many newspapers, magazines, radio stations, and
TV stations that are anxious to promote you and your
Product.
When I say "No Cost Advertising," what I'm really talking
about is publicity- getting a story about you and your
product in the media. Think about it- how often have you
read an article, or heard a report about a new product,
service or business in your local newspaper or on the local
news? The media wasn't paid by the business to run that
story- they simply found news value in that particular
business, and reported it to their audience. The media got
a great story for their audience, and the business got free
exposure from the media.
The media is constantly searching for new, interesting
people and stories to keep their audience happy. They have
to do this, or their audience will tune them out, turn them
off, or simply quit reading their publicati9ns. If you can
provide the media with an interesting story, they will
happily promote you to their audience.
Most people are under the impression the media sends out
huge teams of reporters who turn around and report to the
publication or news station all the interesting stories
they've found. Although this happens every now and then
most stories in the media are "planted."
By "planted" I don't mean someone underhandedly placed a
story in the publication under the nose of the editor. What
I mean is, a local business person or publicist simply
contacted the media by fax or mail with a "press release" -
a short, one page document giving the media good, hard news
they can pass along to their audience. If the media feels
the story is valuable, then they'll publish or air it, and
many times tell their audience how they can contact the
business person to take advantage of the product or service
they ran the story about.
The media does not have the resources to search out all the
stories that may prove interesting to their audience.
Instead, they rely upon people to send them news. Then they
sift and sort through everything they are sent, and publish
the stories they feel will benefit their audience.
The media is actually under tremendous pressure. Every day
they must publish or report stories that are interesting
and entertaining to their readers. They are under constant
deadline pressure to produce these stories. The pressure
never stops, the need for good stories never stops.
However, the media is also under a different kind of
pressure. They are besieged with stories and requests for
interviews that are worthless to their readers, and waste
their time... time that could be spent writing a useful,
interesting story.
How can all this benefit you? How can this get you free
advertising? The answer is simple: if you can provide the
media a timely, well written press release that gives them
great information (information their readers are i
nterested in), they will run your story. It is a breath of
fresh air for a member of the media to get a press release
they can use.
